Founder of Living Donor Match officially finds her match.
October 24, 2018. Julie Daquelente, founder of Living Donor Match, got the news that she will be donating to Robert Clover at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on December 11, 2018.
After starting the process of becoming a living liver donor in August 2018 which eventually led to the creation of Living Donor Match, Daquelente received the call from Benjamin Samstein, MD, the Chief of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, that she was officially cleared for surgery.
Daquelente had connected with Clover’s Mom online in a liver transplant support group after being turned away from two transplant centers because they did not do altruistic living liver donations.
“It was interesting. Here I was wanting to be a living liver donor knowing that there are thousands of people in this country alone waiting on a life-saving transplant, but because I did not know any of these people personally, I was told I couldn’t donate,” explains site creator, Julie Daquelente
It was this experience and the online support groups that led to the creation of Living Donor Match. After starting the process of donating to Clover, she felt she needed to do something to help the hundreds of other people whose faces she saw and stories she read in the liver transplant group online. Daquelente wanted a place for prospective donors to be able to reach out, get support, and hopefully find their match instead of finding themselves in a predicament similar to the one she had faced. She is hoping as Living Donor Match grows and becomes more well known, it will be able to do just that.
As she prepares for her upcoming trip to New York City and surgery, she plans to share her experience, support other potential donors and continue to grow the organization. Visit the website at https://livingdonormatch.org.
